A
Brief History of Oakville
The founder of Oakville
was William Chisholm, the son of a Scottish born loyalist, George Chisholm.Y
oung William grew up in the wilderness of the Niagara Peninsula, relating
closely to the native tribes of the area.
After marrying in 1812,
William served in the British army, fought bravely in the Battle of
Queenston Heights and subsequently was promoted to lieutenant.
After the war, William
lived in the region of Halton County and prospered, shipping timber
from the mouth of Sixteen Mile Creek. Chisholm dreamed at that time
that he could build a town in this area-beginning with a harbour. His
dream was eventually realized. The town would become known as Oakville
and it's development would lead to the growth of the village at the
mouth of the Twelve Mile Creek, known as Bronte.
By 1827, Oakville had
a population of 400, centering around the sawmill, gristmill, shipyard
and harbour, thanks to William Chisholm.
With the emergence of
the railroad in 1855, Oakville became a commuter town and property values
went up. It became an important resort and eventually some of
those summer residents built immense homes on lakeside properties. A
drive along Lakeshore Road. today still reveals remnants of those times.
The neighbouring village
of Bronte was incorporated in 1952. In 1962, the township of Trafalgar,
the village of Bronte and the town of Oakville were amalgamated into
the new Town of Oakville.
